  • Condition: This scarce pair of 1a (10c) cover was cancelled in New York on Aug 31, 1948 and with a destination of Burlington, Iowa. The 10c rate was based on mileage and weight, which in this case was 10 cents, before the adoption of standard postal rates in 1848. Each stamp has an individual red grid cancellation with an additional dated circular hand stamp, that is also a red cancel. All three cancels have higher added premiums. Philatelic Stamp Authentication and Grading (PSAG) identified the pairs are Dark Brown shade or Scott 1a . Notice the clearly written paid letterings at the top right of the envelope. It's quite an interesting letter to read written on high quality J.H. Walsh & Sons Newburgh, New York paper that is still in great shape today. Additional pictures can be sent upon requests.
