STEEPLE-CHASING
Steeple-chasing is conducted in The United
Kingdom under the rules of The National Hunt
Committee. On any steeple-chase course there
must be at least twelve fences in the first two miles,
two of which must have a ditch 6ft. wide on the
take-off side, and there must also be a water jump
at least 12 feet wide either left open or guarded with
a fence not exceeding 3 feet in height. This repre-
sents the minimum of obstacles allowable, there
are often more.
The Grand National course is 4 miles 856 yards,
There are 30 fences of a severer nature and more
varied character than those found on a 'Park
Course.' The Grand National was first tun in 1839
when the favourite Loltary won at 5 to 1.
