    MEXICAN HORSE RACES
The more or less impromptu races got up by the
Vaqueros (cowboys) at Rodeos are ridden across the
rough prairie. Anthills, coyote burrows, etc., are
responsible for many somersaults. The Vaquero
is an adept at quitting the saddle, when it is advisable
to do so, and almost invariably lands on his feet.
He is generally a Spanish-Indian half caste. The
wild, or semi-wild horses of America are all descended
from animals introduced by the Spanish Conquista-
dores. When America was discovered there were.
no horses there, although the remains of an early
form of the-genus equis (Hippidium Neogeum) are
    found in the southern continent.
