FLAT RACING HORSE 100 YEARS AGO
A century ago horse racing was becoming in-
creasingly popular and.important. The Eastern!
blood introduced in the previous. 200 years was by
that time widely diffused and the English
Thoroughbred had become a well-established
type.
The most famous of these Eastern sires were The!
Byerly Turk imported in 1689, the Darly Arabian:
about 1712, and the Godolphin Arabian or Barb a
few years later. The blood of these three sires runs
in the veins of practically every horse on the Turf
in England to-day.
Eclipse, who won the 2nd Derby, was never
beaten on a racecourse, and whose progeny have
won nearly a hundred Derbys, was foaled in 1764,
and was descended from both the Darly and
Godolphin Arabians, although in-bis pedigree were
thirteen mares of unknown~origin. He was a small
chestnut horse and very bad tempered.
