LRRP Special Forces training MACV
Established in 1964 under the orders of General Westmoreland, the MACV Special Forces RECONDO School had an attachment of 46 US Special Forces Personnel designated "Detachment B-52". The duties of USSF B-52 (Delta) was to train US Special Forces and Elite US Army personnel in Long Range Reconnaissance Techniques (LRRP).
The first group of trainees were from the elite of the 101st Airborne Division (and they were volunteers) and commenced their course in September 1966. The MACV Recondo School was taught at Nha Trang, with combat exercises conducted offshore at nearby Hon Tre Island (see map above).
Only the elite of any unit were picked to attend, and they had to possess a combat arms MOS (Military Occupational Speciality). Over 2,000 of the personel that started the course failed to complete it, due to the strict guidelines of completion provided by the MACV.
