Special Forces Base Camps September 1969 GIA VUC
Gia Vuc, designated US Special Forces Base Camp A-103 (previously A-113) was operating prior to it's official opening in 1965 (base camp since at Feb 1962).
Prior to operations by the US 5th Special Forces, CIA Operatives ran Montagnard Mercenaries in combat against the Viet Cong.
Up to 600 Montagnard Operatives performed missions out of this base for a period of eight years up to early 1969 when the base was handed over to the South Vietnamese Special Forces to operate and command.
By September of 1970 desertions amongst the Mercenaries was so high that command was turned over to the 70th Tiger Force Ranger Battalion, they fared little better that their Special Forces counterparts and the camp was closed soon-after.
Ha Thanh Special Forces Camp Within shooting distance of the Gia Vuc Special Forces camp was the Camp of Ha Thanh.
This camp was separate from the Gia Vuc Camp and defended the northern sector of the valley.
This was also ran by US Special Forces with a Montagnard contingent of some 500 operatives was also handed to the Tiger Force Rangers (87th Battalion) in August of 1970.
It too, was closed within a year.
